What is [community profile] 100words?

[community profile] 100words is a weekly drabble challenge community currently hosted on Imzy and now mirrored here on Dreamwidth. Every Tuesday a new prompt is posted -- a word, picture, phrase, quotation -- and members are invited to respond with a drabble (fiction that is exactly 100 words in length).

Do I have to include the prompt in my reply?

No. The prompt is merely a means to get your creative juices flowing.

Seriously, what if my drabble doesn't include the prompt?

Not a problem. The prompt is merely there to inspire you to write 100 words.

What if I write more than 100 words?

Please limit your responses to 100 words in length. There are other communities for fiction under and over 100 words, such as [community profile] fic_promptly and [community profile] fandomweekly.

How do I participate?

Please post your fiction to the community, indicating in the tag which prompt you are answering. We will start with Prompt #25 because that's where 100 Words on Imzy is at.

Here is a template for posting your work:

What if I miss a prompt?

No worries! Every tenth week is an Amnesty Week, when all previous prompts are fair game.

Can I post fanfic/original fic?

All fiction is welcome at [community profile] 100words. Please indicate the fandom in your post, or whether it is original fiction. Content warnings for potential triggers, mature or explicit content, or spoilers are also expected.

Do I need to include content warnings, ratings, and spoilers?

Yes. Please see the question above.

Is there an AO3 collection?

There is! You can find the AO3 collection here and can include your work in the collection by choosing 100words in the "Post to Collections / Challenges" field.

I have a question you haven't answered!

Feel free to comment here!

Original (or) Fandom: Fandom - seaQuest
Rating: G
Notes: X-Men crossover

Lucas looked at Tony. Tony looked at Lucas. “Tony,” Lucas whispered, “I think, maybe, I might be a mutant.”
“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you Luke. Except you got both speed and sticking to the ceiling.
“I think I can become an octopus, too.”
“An octopus?”
“Yeah, I crashed the stinger and swam back to seaQuest. I think I was an octopus.”
“Maybe you can always do whatever is necessary to survive?”
“Very cool.”
“Should we test it?” Tony asked.
“Try to kill me!” Lucas challenged him, and the two ran off through the halls of the seaQuest.

Characters: Pete Burke
Rating: G

Notes: A snapshot from Burke's non-canonical backstory for my own fanfic

Burke never says he’s sorry. It drives his girlfriends mad. Some have broken up with him over it.

He doesn’t see the use of remorse. He takes care to clean up his messes and to not make the same mistake twice. Why make a damn speech about it? Can’t change what’s already happened.

On the day his mom was killed, he’d been hanging out with some guys and forgotten about the time.

If he had been home, he could’ve gone to the store instead of her.

He can’t stop regretting it. But he also can’t say sorry to mom anymore.

Note: I wasn't able to add tags... got this notification:

prompt: #012: Quote II: "Memories warm you up from the inside. But they also tear you apart." ~ Haruki Murakami

Vegetable soup. He could taste it; taste tomato and lentils, and feel the rough chunks of home-grown beans and zucchini. A recipe his mother had dreamed up, when he had first turned vegetarian. He closed his eyes, trying to remember the smell of the kitchen that day. Bread cooking, his brother's feet, their father's beer freshly poured. Back then he had avoided people, preferring his own company. Now there was only him left, and the memories of before tortured as much as they comforted. He longed for such daydreams to leave him, as fiercely as he hoped they never would.

Fandom: None. Speculative non-fic? If there is such a thing!

Notes: Somewhere in the world, 66 million years ago.
Characters: Your great-great-great [...] great-grandfather. ;)

It had a small head. Rat-like, whiskered. The variegated teeth of an omnivore; an unspecialised opportunist. The cold bothered it, and so did the blotted-out sun; the unnatural night that was seemingly without end. Life, however, had to go on. Out there, in the dust-ridden world beyond the burrow, there were corpses by the billion. The starved, the stricken, those charred to ashes by the firestorms. The world had changed, though the small, rat-like creature didn’t know it. It had no concept of the future, of its descendants radiating out into all that empty habitat, and building the world anew.

Another body. There were a lot of them about these days, ever since he turned up, all blue eyes and mysterious past. Before, life had been a string of divorces and security jobs. Now it was murders and car chases, gunfire and fists. She was Harriet Vane, chasing clues, unravelling puzzles with lives held in the balance. And yet the biggest mystery, always, was him – or him and her. Them. Was there a them? Should there be? Did she want there to be? And what would she do if he ever disappeared, back into that past from which he'd come?

Title: Changes
Fandom: Primeval
Pairing:Nick Cutter/Stephen Hart
Rating: G
Notes: It's been 5 years since I wrote Primeval fanfic last. Thanks [community profile] 100words for inspiring me again!

No more Claudia Brown. A brand new ARC. Those were the things that Cutter noticed in this new universe.

He didn’t see how Stephen had changed. He’d never known that Stephen was in love with him, so he couldn’t have known that in this universe the two of them had been lovers. When Stephen had spoken about their shared history, Cutter had shrugged it off. There was no way he could have understood how much that hurt Stephen.

But when Stephen died, something flickered in Cutter’s mind, and he remembered everything that hadn’t been. And a part of him died.

Space was silent, so it was said. Londo Mollari knew the truth. Space was not silent. It screamed; it sobbed; it wailed with the voices of the dead and the dying. All those Centauri; all those Narns. Faceless statistics that he would carry with him to his own death – and maybe beyond.

Here at least there was silence, of a sort. Here in the Zocalo, in the constant din, the constant to-ing and fro-ing of so many thousands of lifeforms, there was a stillness. A refuge. Here, for a little while, Londo could hide from all that he had done.

Title: A Hollow
Original
Rating: PG-13
Notes/Content Warning: Talk of death and implied suicide attempt. From one of my original universes.

There is a small hollow in me now. My death, my mortality, the thing that made me a human with a beginning and end is gone.

I had wanted it to be the end.

But I was brought back with my death now removed. To keep me alive. To prevent me from trying again. A thin silver needle was taken from my throat, so small for the thing that stops the breath and beat of life.

Unable to move as I saw it flash in the light, Vale made it disappear into his sleeve.

I wondered: what was I now?

Fandom: Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger
Rating: PG
Notes: Just a meeting between Lucky and my OC Amelia, a singer from the Columba system.

"Wh-where'd you get that?" Lucky asked, pointing at the object in Amelia's hand.

Looking down at the lavender dove curled around the small globe, the singer was silent for a moment before she spoke. "Jark Matter came after me during one of my concerts, I was trying to defend the audience," she said hesitantly. "I..I couldn't let anything happen to them because of me..."

Lucky was about to say something when the sound of footsteps around the corner caused them to whip around. Passing her a Seiza Blaster, he gave her an encouraging grin.

"Just do what I do."

"Right."

“…did you just kiss me to shut me up, Vale?”

“Will not confirm or deny. Just let me lead you out with that damned elbow of yours. That way you won’t hit me again.”

“I hope that’s your hand on my butt and not some other creepy cave dweller.”

Title: the overwhelming silence
Fandom: MCU (Bucky-centric)
Rating: General
Notes: Oh man, I think I'm breaking through a writing block with this! I'm so excited!

Noise helps him remember, reminds him that he isn't locked up anymore, that the decisions that are being made are by him alone. It doesn't feel like that all the time, every now and then he loses himself in his own head, in his faltering memories and stuttering thoughts, but the noise helps.

Silence makes everything inside feel louder somehow, like the ghosts in his head are amplified and he can't just push them aside or learn to live with them. They force themselves upon him and he starts to choke on them.

These days, it's silence that's his enemy.

Notes: I am going to try and do one or two of these a day to make up for not having been as active in this comm as I meant to. Let's see how that goes.

All she wants is to open the door, to reach out into the daylight and feel the sun on her skin. The warmth of her blankets isn't enough, even the warmth of a human touch doesn't sate her. It's nothing compared to the sun, it's rays casting light on her, reminding her that the world is brighter than she's seen in so long.

She can't even watch it through her window or the crack under the door. That damned door that she wants to open so badly it hurts. But she doesn't have a death wish, so she's left wanting.

"Could that weather be any more horror movie?" Buffy stood at the window, watching forked lightning zigzag earthward, cringing slightly as an especially ferocious thunder peal echoed overhead. "And I have to go hunt demons. Isn't there, like, a good weather clause for Slaying?"

"Unsurprisingly not," said Giles, stake in one hand, oilskin in the other. "Sorry."

"Seriously creepy weather clause?"

"No."

"You're not helping."

"I am. I'm coming with you."

Title: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating: G
Notes: Dracula

It was a dark and stormy night. Well, when wasn’t it? It was, so to speak, his element. He wished he could share that very witty pun, but the drones he kept as help in the castle wouldn’t appreciate it. It was his power over their feeble brains that did it. They kept the flies down and the coffins tidy but it didn’t make them good conversationalists.

He was just back from a call on the new Slayer. Horrible weather. Dry, sunny during long tedious day. But the Slayer seemed someone one could talk to. Pity it didn’t work out.
