Title: A Muddled Truth
Fandom: The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde [book, Stevenson]
Rating: Gen
Notes: Utterson reflects after reading Jekyll's confession.
Utterson let the last page fall from his fingers. A bit of Shakespeare intruded on his thoughts.
“To thine own self be true, and thou canst not then be false to any man,” he muttered.
Henry Jekyll had been true to himself, truer than any other person alive, and yet he’d also been false to many a man. Or had he?
Evil, yes. Utterson could not sanction Edward Hyde’s cruel behaviour though he appreciated Jekyll’s curiosity and even the effort to which he’d gone to satisfy it.
Utterson sighed at the muddled truth: he condemned—and commended—his late friend.
