In the library, Venetia had been holding forth on her wedding plans, certain that her brother Aubrey wasn’t paying her any attention. Her thoughts naturally turned to Damerel, and she said, without thinking,
“…and I found I was falling in love the way one falls asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”
Aubrey started and gave his sister a keen look.
“Oh, my beloved Thucydides!” he exclaimed, a look of rapture on his face.
“Aubrey, are you falling in love with Thucydides?” teased Venetia.
“No, my dear, the copy of the book I'd misplaced is behind you on the desk.”
