“Let’s take another look at Jenkins’ alibi,” DCI Barnaby said.  “What was there to support it?”

Jones thought for a moment.  “Whitehead said he could see Jenkins from where he was painting the cottage.”

“But we now know Whitehead wasn’t there all day, because he had to go and buy some more paint.”

“Thus giving Jenkins the opportunity to use the cut-through, take the painting and be back before Whitehead returned.

“And so his alibi comes crashing down the same way Whitehead did when he trod on the rung of the ladder and found it was no longer supporting him.”
