Lucas North considered the bored commuter he was pressed against in the crowded tube and yearned for the day when life would be regular and ordered, instead of following the possible spy standing at the far end of the carriage, with all the cold, long hours and danger it involved.

The accountant, meanwhile, yearned for some excitement which would take him away from his tedious figures into a life of a spy with all its glamour and action.

All three left at the same station, and, as they exited, the spy fired a shot, missing Lucas, but hitting the accountant.
