“I’d say, ‘put me in your shoes’,” Zenkichi stares down at her— apologetically, vulnerably— “but I know what it’s like to have lost your father.”
His voice drops low, softer than she thought the loud-mouthed photographer could ever speak. He narrows himself, shoving hands into pockets as he murmurs, eyes flickering, “I lost mine too. And I’m not the only one who knows what it’s like.”
Shiho looks beyond him to the silhouette in the corner, a black-haired mystery, then to the tall stranger and the threads connecting them.
“But,” Zenkichi smiles falsely, “Don’t tell him I told you that.”
