For Frank it wasn’t so much the enemy who existed outside, but the enemy found within.  He was a police constable and his job included arresting prostitutes like Jenny Maple and men like Albert, people who off-duty he could be seen drinking with in the Midnight Bell.  As a man, and Albert’s boyfriend, he was terrified of being caught by the very constables he spent his working day with.  He wondered how much others in the pub knew or suspected, and whether they hated him for it.  Whatever the case, they couldn’t hate him as much as he hated himself.
