Inspector Lestrade watched as the two men departed into the London gloom, leaving him with the solution to another baffling case.

‘There goes Mr Holmes and his loyal companion, Dr Watson, just as the newspapers refer to them,’ Lestrade thought.  ‘Only I wonder, is it also true to say that Holmes is just as much the doctor’s companion as the other way round?  Despite what is sometimes said to the contrary, Holmes will put himself out to assist Watson, something I’ve never known him do for any other man.’

The two companions, although oblivious to Lestrade’s thoughts, would have concurred.
