The tension in 221B was palpable. Inspector Lestrade had tried to be reassuring, but his attempts had been greeted with a terse, “I won’t relax until I know he’s back.”
“I’m sure everything will be all right,” Lestrade added, but this was met with a grunt.
Finally, the front door opened and both men strained forward, listening. The footsteps started up the stairs, halted at the kitchen, before continuing up.
Watson entered the room and smiled. “Holmes, you’re in the clear,” he said. “I bought the last soup tureen in that pattern. Mrs Hudson will never know you broke hers.”
