“The Colonel woke momentarily, then lapsed back into Queen Mab’s embrace. Didn’t say anything about the supposed accident. The only thing he would say is ‘the fishing rod is a dead cat.’ A proverb of some kind?”
Jeeves’ eyes went slightly round. “The Colonel is a fox hunter.”
“Yes, the Pychley know him well.”
“To confuse the hounds and prolong the hunt, there is dragged a dead cat or…”
“A smoked, that is to say, red herring! Jeeves, the fishing rod is a red herring!”
“The game’s afoot, sir!”
