Ori was not on guard duty, but he couldn’t sleep. He sat with his back to a wall, updating the book in his lap. The scratching of his quill seemed too loud in the stillness, and the lamp barely held the shadows at bay.
Ori looked up to find several of the others watching him.
“Tell us a tale, Ori,” Svava said suddenly. “Something cheerful. You know the best ones.”
Ori thought for a moment. Falling into a storyteller’s cadence, he began, “This is the tale of Bombur’s Feast.”
Doom, doom, went the drums below.
“When we came to Mirkwood . . .”
