Whenever Edith awakens, Lucille is there. Everything remains the same: the flickering candles, Lucille's dark dress, the warm spoon full of bitter gall Lucille slips between her lips as soon as her eyes open. She can't bear it anymore. "Please," she whispers. "Let me drink it."
Lucille stills, spoon poised over the cup. "You want to drink it?" she repeats softly.
"Please," Edith says again.
Lucille lifts the cup, blotting what Edith can't swallow with a musty lace-edged handkerchief. As Edith chokes, she holds her hand.
"Don't worry," she says tenderly. "I'll be here with you until the end."
