Author’s Notes: I wanted to try Eloise’s POV, and this week’s 100words prompt was Amnesty Week, so I picked the one about even villains smiling (254. Shakespeare IX: Hamlet: Meet it is I set it down. That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain.)
I’m with my class of People’s Commissioners, at our graduation, as we say in fiery unison, with Citizen Chairman Oscar St-Just, “I vow to eradicate the disloyal naval elitists…. to ensure the People’s Republic will… shining beacon of light… against the imperialists.” Does the Committee know how much they mock Péricard’s Republic, with that oath to St-Just? Or is it a mere accident?
We are all smiling, as he proclaims us the new “line of defense against the capitalist hordes…”.
He finally ends his protracted speech with, “Arise, Commissioners!” Somehow, that line stuck in my mind despite being an Aprilist.
