Aida’s days are spent in servitude to the Egyptian princess, attending on her commands and whims. Amneris is kind and cruel by turns, like a well-fed cat; when the mood takes her, she caresses Aida, calls her friend and sister. Aida knows better than to forget the claws.

But her dreams are still free. At night, she dreams of wandering through the sweet-scented forests of her home, chases after her brothers, hears her father’s deep voice calling her name. When she wakes up, it takes a moment to remember where she is, and then loneliness pierces her like a sword.
