“You’ve got a lot of marbles, Lizzie,” I remarked to our young neighbour one Saturday afternoon.

Her father laughed.  “Yes, she’s been getting so good, some of the boys are refusing to play with her.”

“They said I should return any marbles I win to them,” Lizzie said, “but I replied they were playing for keeps and therefore so was I.”

“It sounds like you have a young suffragette on your hands, Hopkins,” I said.

He chuckled.  “Give her time and she’ll be joining Annie and Florrie.  Don’t tell anyone, but they’ve gone to the meeting in town this afternoon.”
