I had seen the dark clouds moving in and felt the winds picking up and had told Seth to leave; we could continue our task the following day. Shortly after he departed I heard Holmes’ footsteps coming round the side of the cottage, as he, too, had decided to curtail his afternoon activities and return home. We had retired indoors, and although it was now quiet, I did not think it would last long. I watched as Annie Hopkins, assisted by Lizzie, hurriedly gathered the sheets from the line and scurried indoors. The rain would not hold off much longer.
