“Of course, if Jennings hadn’t found what he assumed was a copy of the will, he’d never have had the idea at all,” Miss Marple said.  “The thought of potentially having access to so much money was more than he could resist.  But Mary is such a common name, and it should have occurred to him that Dr Forbes might not mean Jennings’ wife, but his new granddaughter.”

“Surely the copy should have made this clear,” Dolly Bantry said.

“It wasn’t really a copy, just notes Dr Forbes had made for himself, and naturally he knew which Mary he meant.”
