If there had been another way to achieve peace and see no more lives lost over cursed gold and shiny gems, Bilbo would have taken that path. As such, he has lost the hard-earned trust of the Company as they watched him with hard, dark eyes while their wounded King and his Heirs lay in a healing sleep.
"Why?" It is painful to hear them ask him this single word whenever their paths cross throughout Erebor's rebuilding.
"Because I didn't know what else to do." The only answer he could give them. These moments are where words often fail him.
