While Holmes had gone to a classical concert which had had no appeal to me, Lestrade and I had spent a very pleasant evening at a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Mikado, after which we had stopped at a public house before returning to Baker Street. As I said, it was a very pleasant evening, and we were therefore singing Three Little Maids as we made our way up the stairs. It was unfortunate, therefore, that we encountered Mrs Hudson, doing a plausible imitation of the Lord High Executioner, which brought a sudden, rather unexpected, halt to our music making.
