The first time he touched his mortal wife was with gloved hand on her wrist, pulling her ungently into his kingdom. The second time was his hand at her throat—she had so insulted and defied him. Her skin was strangely warm; like danger, like fire, like death. He was angrier at himself, that his quick breathing was not all from anger.
The third time: in the midst of her doomed, gallant fight to keep her word. Beyond all hope, she succeeded; she stood before him triumphant like a queen. He wanted to touch her, to make their bargain anew.
