Poirot smiled indulgently at the small girl who crept behind one of the large armchairs in the library, after holding a finger to her lips. She, along with several others at the Christmas house party, was enjoying the game of hide and seek which had been organised as the weather was too inclement to play outside.

And then a scream, which was quickly joined by another, not this time screams of excitement but of terror, had Poirot on his feet and hurrying out of the library. Clearly they had found something they had not expected, but which Poirot had feared.
