Trixie sank down on her bed. It wasn’t fair; she’d tried so hard for so long. She’d attended her meetings week in week out and stayed sober. But now she had turned her back on proffered happiness. She didn’t regret her decision. Of course she wished she hadn’t had to make it, but she wouldn’t let her chance for happiness deny a child their own. She turned to the only source of consolation left to her, unscrewing the flask and pouring herself a cocktail. She knew where it would lead, but she no longer had the strength to fight it.
