There was always a good crowd for a mid-week matinee performance. Tickets were cheaper, the clothes the audience wore were inevitably shabbier, but you knew they were there for one thing. They wanted to be entertained. They wanted something which would take them out of their poverty-stricken, brown and grey world. They loved the singing and the dancing; the idea that somewhere there was another life, where the costumes were sparkling and brightly coloured, and there was hope for the future. When the performance finished they’d have to return to their daily lives, but they’d always be back for more.
