Most people refused to believe Holmes had retired, and even when we moved to our cottage in Sussex, they continued to write asking for his assistance. Wisely, Holmes had not allowed our new address to be widely known, arranging instead for all correspondence to be sent to a solicitor, who was paid to reply that 'Mr Holmes thanks you for your letter, but he is no longer in business'. This did not mean he was unaware of matters, and continued to provide Hopkins with counsel when requested, but those who expected to buy his services were now deprived of them.
