Miss Marple had been invited to a Hallowe'en party by a couple who had recently moved into St Mary Mead. As it was a fancy dress party, she dressed in black, and created a pointed hat out of some card Dolly had found her. Once there, she encountered a ghost, and said, "Ah, Inspector, I presume you have your suspicions of our hosts as well. If I may make a suggestion, you will be more convincing if you wave your arms under your sheet and made some suitable ghost-like noises."

"How did you know?" Slack muttered.

"I am a witch."
