"You know my methods, Watson, you just need to apply them."
How often has Holmes said those words to me and I have struggled and, despite in theory knowing the same as he did, it would, once again, be a case of my seeing but not observing. And then, when he did explain the logic of the case and make clear exactly how he'd solved it, I would nod along and yet still be unable to copy his methods. And, even though I knew something of how he worked, his explanations continued to be to me a form of magic.
