We were temporarily trapped in our cottage. Perhaps that sounds a little too dramatic for what was in truth the case, but the result was the same. A sudden cold snap had left the paths around the cottage very icy and neither Holmes nor I were inclined to risk a fall, knowing that our limbs were far more vulnerable than those of our young neighbours. Moreover, if either of us were to fall, even without breaking something, the other would have difficulty helping the fallen one back to their feet. We therefore resigned ourselves to staying indoors until it thawed.
