"There was no alternative," Sherlock Holmes protested. "It had to be done."
I looked at him, but refrained from comment.
"So, having berated me for my actions," Holmes continued, "what do you suggest I do?"
I glared at him, and said, "In your shoes, I suppose I would try to brazen it out. Although I cannot see how that will work."
There was a knock on the door and I called out cheerfully, "Come in!"
Mrs Hudson entered and began, "Mr Holmes, what have you got to say?"
"It wasn't me."
"The muddy footprints up my clean stairs say otherwise!"
I looked at him, but refrained from comment.
