She was halfway up the ladder when Spike said it.
“Stay with me. For once, just stay.”
Buffy didn’t turn, just momentarily stopping her climb. “I can’t,” she whispered.
He sat up in the shadows of the crypt, sheet slung low, elbows on his knees. “Can’t or won’t?”
“Don’t insist, Spike. You know I can’t.”
The silence stretched as he watched her climb to the top of the ladder. “I know that if you stayed you’d be forced to admit to yourself that you’re starting to feel something. So you bid farewell instead, and run.”
Wordlessly, she did just that.
