Returning home after patrol, Buffy heard the chatter carrying from her kitchen and knew that Spike had planned a birthday party, going against her instructions.
She marched in there, ready to scold him, but what she found made her heart melt with delight. Dawn mixed the batter while Spike handled the frosting, and little Joyce giggled as Xander helped her drop sugary flower decorations on top of the cupcakes.
“What’s this?” she asked, her voice soft.
Dawn grinned. “A surprise family gathering with cupcakes.”
Buffy glared at Spike, who approached her with a smile. “It’s past midnight, pet. Happy non-birthday.”
