The low hum of Doublemeat Palace was fading when Buffy punched out at the end of her shift.
She hung her bright orange uniform and hideous cow cap in the locker, her shoulders sagging under the weight of reality.
How had she gone from Heaven to a minimum wage job that was barely keeping her and Dawn afloat? She’d given her life for the mission—twice—and apparently her reward was this huge package of hurt and pain, a constant reminder of what she’d lost.
She shook her head, trying to push the sting away. She knew exactly where to go next.
