The hour grows late, the trickle of worshipers into the temple stops, and Apollo steals inside unseen to observe the offerings. There's the usual: coins, food, trinkets. But at the edge of one small altar sits something that steals his breath: a crown made of fresh hyacinths.
Apollos runs fingers over it and sees its origin behind his eyes: a small child toddling forward, nudging it onto the marble and murmuring, “For you, Lord Apollo. I'm sorry your friend died.”
Eyes misting, the god lifts the treasure and settles it on golden curls, touched by grief and gratitude at once.
