Sherlock Holmes had been watching the undergrowth intently, waiting for signs of their suspect. The leaves on the bushes began to shake and Holmes tensed up, ready to spring. And then a family of partridges emerged and headed across the field next to the bushes. Holmes let out an exasperated groan.
"Bear up, Holmes," Dr Watson said cheerfully. "You could say that the game is a-foot!"
Holmes turned and glared at his friend. Then he gave a bark of laughter, scaring the partridges who began to run. "Watson," he said, "where would we be without your pawky sense of humour?"
