After shaking his head several times, feeling his long floppy ears whip satisfyingly around his body, the little dog still hadn't cleared the strange, barely audible noises out of his head. He had at first assumed it was bats, except that he could just make out coherent words, as though a tiny person were whispering frantically to him, calling out in high-pitched distress.
He walked over to the fireplace and sniffed it. After several seconds there was no response, so he let out a warning growl. Something in the sooty, cavernous darkness shifted and out popped a tiny, two-dimensional... thing.
