Becky Sharp quickly realised she had underestimated the effect of her announcement of her marriage to Rawdon Crawley.  Sir Pitt’s fury had been almost unimaginable, but at least his frenzied behaviour had been at a distance.  But Lady Matilda’s actions had stunned her.  Becky had expected initial animosity, but then had thought her affection for her nephew would overcome that.  To learn that this was not the case was a blow to Becky’s ambitions which led her into a frenzy of letter writing and plotting.  The resultant £20 not being what she hoped for, a new plan was urgently needed.
