Becky Sharp couldn’t understand why Amelia was in such a panic.  So, the troops had marched to meet Napoleon, what was the worse that could happen?  Well, George Osborne might be killed; that would be a relief to Becky, and Amelia would get over it in time.  As for Rawdon Crawley, whether he lived or died, she’d survive.  And she could use the time he way away to prepare for his return; her grip on him had loosened, she needed to tighten it.

Her panic began on hearing the cannon fire. If Brussels fell her plans would come to nought.
