Dean was still a child when his mom died, hanging on the ceiling, covered with flames. His father told him to bring Sam out of the house, and he obeyed without protest. All he could think was: 'This is the end.' The end of his childhood, the end of his life. It would never be again like it had been before.
Then Sam opened his eyes; he was much too young to understand what was going on, but there was something in his look that gave Dean some comfort. Whatever would happen, the bond between him and Sam was everlasting.
