Title: Ships, Night, Wreckage
Original
Rating: G
Notes: When you know, you know.
Barefoot on the balcony, fireworks above and music below. She curls her fingers around the railing, thumbs scraping rust.
It’s a quiet two am. The hours preceding were ugly. But her eyes are clear, her breaths even; what fills her lungs is an absence of hate, a peculiar numbness, a prickling that cools her bones.
“When did you know?” a hollow voice says behind her, and she says nothing, letting the moment congeal and wither. “Why wait until now, to say it?”
“I knew when I met you,” she says, later, smiling. “It’s a new year. We deserve new lives.”

Anyway. New years bring new things. Fireworks, and the occasional burning. And sometimes messy, awkward moments that take too long to die.
