“How was your year?” he asked.

Informal meet, handler and agent. Just past happy hour at a lounge populated by well-tailored suits and sharp dresses. Measured extravagance offered certain anonymities.

“Full of delights, rare and true,” she said. “How’s your whisky?”

He glanced down (highball glass, two fingers of pale amber, a sliver of ice) and shrugged. “Sweet, smoky. Cherry and oak,” he said. “It's...acceptable.”

“Very good,” she nodded. “You’ll probably want some vodka, after. Shots. Or a bottle.”

“After what?”

“The good news.”

“Which is?”

“You’re burned.” She dipped a finger into his drink, had a taste. “They know.”
