White noise was the first clue that it was happening again, a distorted crackling that rose in pitch until it became the howl of a storm.
Like the whole world was out of tune.
Running out of the door while reaching for his phone, he looked up at the sky. Darkness, deeper and colder and emptier than night, utterly lifeless and silent and still. As if the sky was a phone screen that someone had thrown a brick at, maddening smears of all colours bled from the edges.
"Evacuate everyone!" he yelled over his phone, "Let's get the fuck out!"
