It was lucky, Sister Monica Joan thought, that everyone had gone out, leaving her in charge of a plate of jam tarts.  Which she really ought to try.  But then that left eleven on the plate, and someone might think that was a strange number of tarts, so she evened it up.  And then she tried another tart, for luck.

It was lucky that Valerie Dyer came into the kitchen when she did, or Sister Monica Joan would have probably made herself ill by the over-consumption of jam tarts.  As it was, there was only just enough for one each.
