It wasn’t something Violet Buckle was going to tell Fred about, but nevertheless she was pleased with what she’d achieved.  She didn’t mind Fred doing the extra work (unless, of course, she needed a lift to the wholesalers), but she did feel it should be acknowledged.

So when he’d said to her, “You’ll never guess what I found in my pay packet this afternoon: payment for the extra hours I’ve worked, plus petrol money for driving Mother Mildred,” she’d simply replied, “You deserve it” and left it at that. 

She didn’t like to see her Fred being taken for granted.
