She regrets the words as they leave her lips, but the damage is done. Chauvelin smiles, all teeth, humorless and predatory in a way that makes her think of a snarling animal.

They exchange the necessary farewells. His bows are too formal, his hands cold and rigid. When she meets his pale eyes, there is a merciless edge that sends gooseflesh down her arms.

Marguerite had intended to seek justice for her brother. She'd hoped that Chauvelin's influence with the Committee would be the answer to her prayers.

As the door closes, she wonders if she's loosed a demon, instead.
