It would have been possible to go a different way, if the leaders of the nations had been prepared to talk.  But the pride of old men stood as a formidable road block.  The need to maintain one’s position, plus a rigid following of the rules laid down years before, meant the other road would not even be considered.  Would they have acted differently if they could have seen to the end of the road, seen the destruction they would inflict?  Probably not, for the road not taken was the one labelled ‘Peace’, and above all else, they were warriors.
