Just getting there slightly later or earlier wasn't going to cut it. So far it had made a big difference to what happened when he finally stepped off the boat, so much so, in fact, that he had seriously thought he was onto something several times. Once he thought he'd cracked it, broken the cycle, that he'd finally be able to leave. Once he thought he'd irredeemably doomed himself, even more so than usual. But no, everything had reset as usual, landing him back on the boat. It'd take something truly unusual to make a permanent difference. Maybe something unforgivable.
