“Blame this on my refusal to support a system which will expand slavery into the west. Mexico has no slavery. Why do you think Polk and his supporters want war?”

Cool. I’m not very familiar with the transcendentalists, but I like it. :)

Thank you. They were very involved in social reform. Thoreau went to jail rather than pay a tax that would be used to support the war with Mexico (which was intended to capture land for southern expansion and, with that, the expansion of slavery).
