If you asked Arsène Lupin was he liked best about being a gentleman-thief, he would, laughing, say that he wasn’t a thief at all, really. What he wanted, more than the things he stole, was to draw the high low, to make the clever stupid, to deprive the greedy of their hoard. He liked to prick the balloon of arrogance. Yes, laughing, he would say he wasn’t a thief, and, laughing, he would say he wasn’t much of a gentleman either. He liked the foreplay too much. No, not a gentleman, nor a thief, but a scamp and a tease.
