It was rather fun, Lady Brute thought, to lead Constant on with her teasing.  She could smile, and send signs with her fan, and at the same time she could maintain her claim she had never been unfaithful to her husband.  And so she had intended to continue with her little japes.

However, although it had been fun, Constant had grown serious, and Sir John had his suspicions and refused to believe her protestations of innocence.  She had been a tease, but it had gone on for too long, and now she was in trouble, which would only get worse.
