It was, Mary Rutherford reflected ruefully, ironic that she should have turned to her loathed father-in-law to act as her protector.  Her husband, the father of her child, had failed her once again.  He hadn’t been able to earn sufficient to support them before the child was born, and now, despite all his proud words, he’d stolen money from his father and returned to London.  She had no hope that he’d fulfil his promise of sending for them as soon as he could afford it.  No, her son needed a protector and so the bargain had had to be made.
