Kirk and Spock looked at the wrecked component, then back at Scotty.

“How quickly can you repair it?” Kirk asked.  “We’re going to need our shields up as soon as possible.”

“It will take the best part of a day to repair it properly,” Scotty replied.

“We don’t have that long,” Spock snapped.

“Which was why I was going to say I’ll do a botch job for now.  It won’t hold for long but should enable us to get away.  I shall need a replacement for Ensign Hooper though.”

“Of course, Mr Scott,” Spock replied.  “I’ll send someone down immediately.”
